About Promontory R19
Promontory R19 is nestled into the hillside at Promontory Club, which is the polite way of saying the site made a lot of the decisions. The house reads as contemporary from the approach and warms considerably once you are inside it, which is a harder balance to strike than it looks.
A porte-cochere and breezeway handle the arrival. Past that the plan opens into spaces built for people who actually use their house: an entertainment room, a music room, an indoor golf simulator, fireplace conversation pits that pull people into a circle rather than facing a screen. The outdoor dining and lounge spaces and the hot tub continue the same idea - the mountain views are the point, and the architecture keeps getting out of their way.
The contemporary lines carry traditional detailing underneath them. That combination is easy to specify and difficult to build, because the tolerances of modern architecture leave nowhere for traditional millwork to hide.
Completed in 2019 under Ezra Lee Design and Build, with Derek as the sole representative on the project. It won People's Choice at the 2019 Park City Showcase of Homes.

Millwork with nowhere to hide
Traditional casing usually covers the gap between trim and wall. Here the walls meet the millwork at a clean reveal, so every joint is visible and every run has to be straight within a sixteenth. The paneling was scribed to the framing after drywall, then fitted in place rather than delivered as finished pieces. It is the part of the house most visitors never mention, and it took longer than anything else on the interior.
